The evaporative cooler is an air conditioning system that promises to provide fresh air in an efficient and environmentally friendly manner. But does it really work?
In this article, we will explore how the evaporative cooler works and evaluate its effectiveness in providing much-desired thermal comfort during hot weather.
How does the evaporative cooler work?
Is it really possible to produce fresh air outdoors and without waste?
Yes, thanks to the natural phenomenon of evaporation.
The evaporative cooler uses the principle of water evaporation to cool the surrounding air. It works through a simple but effective process: the evaporative cooler unit draws in warm air from the room and passes it through a moist panel or porous material soaked in water. The water absorbs heat from the surrounding air and evaporates, drastically reducing the temperature of the emitted air, creating a pleasant feeling of coolness around the device.
What are the advantages of an evaporative cooler?
The evaporative cooler consumes little energy and is extremely efficient compared to other air conditioning systems, especially when it is very hot. Here are some of the main advantages of evaporative coolers:
- Energy efficiency: the evaporative cooler consumes significantly less energy than conventional air conditioners, reducing energy costs.
- Reduced costs: the installation and maintenance of an evaporative cooler is much less expensive than traditional cooling systems. Moreover, they do not require the use of expensive chemical refrigerants.
- Sustainability: coolers do not release polluting gases and do not use environmentally harmful substances in their operation, helping to reduce environmental impact.
- Health benefits: the best evaporative coolers are also able to filter and sanitise the air that passes through them, without producing and releasing pollutants.
What are the possible disadvantages of an evaporative cooler?
Despite the many advantages already mentioned, evaporative coolers also have some limitations to be considered before purchasing:
- Dependence on environmental conditions: an evaporative cooler works almost anywhere, even in high humidity. However, its effectiveness is greatly increased in particularly dry environments.
- Limited indoor cooling: unlike air conditioning, which works best in thermally insulated rooms, evaporative coolers are most effective in open or well-ventilated spaces. This does not mean that they cannot provide sufficient cooling even indoors, but your needs must be carefully considered.
- Uncontrollable temperature: most evaporative cooler models do not provide precise temperature control, but merely cool the air according to the outside temperature. They can be extremely effective, but it is not possible to regulate the air temperature as is the case with an air conditioner.
Is it worth buying an evaporative cooler?
In general, yes.
Evaporative cooling is an attractive alternative to traditional cooling systems, offering a greener, more efficient and less expensive approach to air cooling. In fact, although they consume (little) electricity and water for the evaporation process, the consumption of both is still lower than other conventional systems.
Moreover, they are extremely versatile and can be used in both domestic and commercial environments, indoors and outdoors.
